Media Literacy for Safe & Healthy Choices (grades 4-6)

As educators, you most likely witness first-hand the impact of media on your students. According to the  AAP, American Academy of Pediatrics, “media use risks include negative health effects on sleep, attention, and learning; a higher incidence of obesity and depression; exposure to inaccurate, inappropriate, or unsafe content and contacts; and compromised privacy and confidentiality.”[Pediatrics, October 2016]

Educators everywhere are asking for help and Media Power Youth has heard the call.

Media Literacy for Safe and Healthy Choices is an evidence-based, media literacy curriculum and training. All needed material are included for implementation in your 4-6 grade classroom: comprehensive teacher’s guide, all lesson plans, handouts, images, video clips and student worksheets.

The curriculum supports easy integration across many subject areas, including language arts, social studies, math, science, health and more. In addition, it aligns with national and state learning standards in multiple subject areas. (List provided- click here)

Students will use critical thinking skills, analysis and deconstruction to evaluate media messages and decide if the message is safe and healthy for them. Having these skills enables students to be more effective consumers of media and positive producers of healthy media messages.

The curriculum includes 12 lessons:

1-5  Effects of Media Violence

6-9  Substance Use Influences in Media

10-12  Media and Food Advertisement

Media Literacy for Safe and Healthy Choices curriculum and training has demonstrated evidence of helping children significantly increase understanding that media and advertising:

  • Have a strong effect on what people think and do.
  • Make violence seem less harmful than in real life.
  • Make smoking & drinking alcohol seem less harmful.
  • Influences amount/types of snacks kids eat drink.
  • Make snacks seem more attractive & healthier than they really are.
